Bad Designers Win (here’s how)

When you’re bad at something, it’s tempting to think you’re failing.
But what if it’s actually the proof you’re doing it right?
Most freelance designers think success looks like getting everything perfect from day one.
Perfect designs. Perfect strategy process. Perfect presentations.
But in reality, perfectionism is the trap that keeps you stuck.
When you expect yourself to be amazing right away, you hesitate.
You second-guess every move.
You tweak the same portfolio project for weeks.
You overthink every Instagram post.
And worst of all?
You don’t ship.
But what you need to realise is that messy action beats perfect intentions every single time.
The designers who move fast (even when they feel clunky) learn faster, iterate quicker, and grow stronger businesses.
The ones who wait until they’re “ready” stay stuck for months (or years).
They remain frozen on the same challenges they faced at the beginning.
They’re paralyzed because they’ve spent all their time thinking instead of doing.
So what should you do?
Embrace:
Every awkward strategy call you stumble through…
Every “meh” logo you design…
Every clunky first draft you send a client…
These are good signs.
They mean you’re moving.
You’re learning.
You’re getting the real experience you can’t shortcut by reading more design books or watching more YouTube tutorials.
And I know you might be thinking this will be difficult, uncomfortable, and stress-inducing…but when things come easy, you don’t learn much.
Struggle forces you to slow down, think critically, and understand the why.
That’s how you build real experience and creative muscle.
And that’s what separates struggling freelance designers from those who end up with clients coming out of their ears!
Here’s the simple truth:

One tiny messy action today beats six months of “planning” that never sees the light of day.
The designers who act win.
Every time.
Now, taking messy action is powerful, but having the right systems in place makes it 10x easier (and way less stressful).
That’s why I created the Pro Freelancer Bundle: a complete toolkit that gives you everything you need to confidently manage branding projects without scrambling last minute or reinventing the wheel each time.
Either way, remember: no system or tool replaces the real magic 👉 your willingness to show up, take messy action, and keep moving.
It’s all building you into the designer you’re aiming to become.
You don’t have to be great to start.
You just have to start to get great.
Courage is more valuable than perfectionism.
Always has been. Always will be.
Let’s see how fast you can move when you stop trying to be perfect.
What’s one imperfect thing you can ship this week?
Abi 😊
